Swiss Village Retirement Community has announced plans to develop a 21,202 square foot wellness pavilion to be located in Berne. The center will be named the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion. Residents of the retirement community along with area residents who purchase membership will have access to the facilities and programs. Research studies are increasingly showing the connectedness between wellness and quality of life. The overarching goal of the wellness pavilion is to provide the citizens of the southern part of Adams County with the facilities, equipment and programs to promote an enhanced quality of life.
The wellness pavilion is being named in honor of Arthur and Gloria Muselman who were residents of Berne and supporters of Swiss Village. Mr. Muselman served on the Board of Directors of Swiss Village for 31 years. Mrs. Muselman served as the Director of Volunteers during the formative years of the retirement community. In recent years the Muselman couple shared a dream of seeing a wellness center become a reality for Berne and neighboring communities. On August 31, 2007 the couple met an untimely death in an automobile accident in Wells County.
Daryl Martin, Executive Director of Swiss Village stated that "This wellness pavilion is going to become a reality because of Art and Gloria. Naming the wellness facility in their honor is intended to serve as a tribute to their generosity and visionary support. Many others have partnered with us to raise the money required to build this wellness center, but Art and Gloria provided the lead gift and motivation to see this project happen. The southern part of Adams County is fortunate to have a facility like this and we will always be indebted to the Muselmans for making it possible."
During the past several years Swiss Village developed a wellness program on their campus that has served the residents of the retirement community. Due to space limitations, memberships had to be restricted to Swiss Village residents.
Facilities will include an aquatic center, strength building fitness area, floor exercise space, a game room along with lounge facilities.
In addition to wellness programming it is anticipated that the facilities will be able to accommodate receptions and parties.

Swiss Village is optimistic about the benefit that the wellness pavilion will provide to the southern part of Adams County. There are several trends that are converging to support the importance of wellness. Repeated studies have shown that lack of exercise is a contributing factor for most debilitating diseases. These studies are frequently reported in the mass media outlets. Obesity alone is estimated to cost this country $117 billion a year. Studies linking poor health to lack of exercise have prompted Governor Daniels to start INShape, a statewide initiative to encourage the citizens of Indiana to take personal responsibility for their own wellness by engaging in active exercise on a regular basis. The aging baby boom generation is beginning to take increased notice of the importance of including wellness initiatives in their lifestyle habits. In the midst of these realities the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion will bring together facilities, equipment and programming to promote wellness and improved quality of life.
