Muselman couple killed in crash

The collision of a van and a tractor-trailer truck late Thursday afternoon in Wells County took the lives of well-known Berne businessman Arthur K. Muselman, 77, and his wife, Gloria E. Muselman, 76.

Mr. Muselman was the longtime owner of EP Graphics in Berne, formerly known as Economy Printing, as well as the Berne Tri-Weekly News. The tragedy occurred around 5:20 p.m. at the intersection of State Rds. 1 and 218, according to the Wells County Sheriff's Department.

A van driven by Mrs. Muselman was turned from 218 going north on 1 and apparently entered the path of a southbound tractor-trailer truck driven by Eugene M. Hackler, 51, Union City, Indiana, authorities said. After the initial impact on the left front of the van, that vehicle ended up in the yard of a church, while the tractor-trailer truck entered a ditch, then hit some trees.

Wells County Sheriff Bob Frantz said this morning that the Muselmans died at the scene and that Hackler was "shaken up" and examined at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. He said the van was a total loss and the tractor-trailer suffered "substantial damage." Funeral arrangements for the Muselman couple are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.
